Porta of Ceylon and throughout the Straits is, am inform-

~ed, "Master Attendant", which is, however, inapplicable
here since it does not include the duties of Marine
Magistrate. It appears to be a title borrowed from the
Royal Navy where it is used to designate duties of quite a
different nature to those of a Colonial Harbour Master.

Captain Basil Taylor suggests the
title of "Port Captain" or "Captain of the Port"; the
former is used in Natal and Cape Colony, and the latter at
Indian Ports and Gibraltar.
